1. What is Adventure Racing?
A. Rapidly growing in popularity, Adventure Racing is a teamwork challenge that combines mountain biking, trail running and other activities, along with numerous "mystery challenges." Often one-day events, adventure races test participants' physical and mental endurance, and are appropriate for weekend warriors and professional adventure racers alike.

2. Are there any rules to Adventure Racing?
A. Yes, the four rules to Adventure Racing are:
  • All Adventure Racers must complete the racecourse as marked.
  • Teams must be fully self-contained and cannot except help from anyone except other teams, and must be eco sensitive (i.e. teams leaving any trash, bottles, or equipment on the course or transition area will be disqualified.)
  • All Adventure Racers must complete all special tests ("mystery challenges") as a team and cross the finish line as a team.
  • Kayaks and/or canoes cannot be dragged at any time.

    3. Is the Adventure Race a relay?
    A. No. Each team member will start at the same time and complete every course and mystery challenge together. The team is given one overall finish time.

    4. Where is the course?
    A. The Life Time Fitness Desert Dash course is located in Boulder City/Lake Mead (approximately 25 miles outside of Las Vegas).

    5. What does the course look like?
    A. This course is unique and suited to the specific terrain of the area. This course will include a 15 to 25 mile mountain bike course, a 5 to 10 mile trail run, a 5 to 15 mile revolving discipline, and 3-4 mystery challenges. Teams are not told the distances, order of events until the pre-race meeting.

    6. Is the course marked? How do I know where I'm going?
    A. Yes, the course will be marked.

    7. What happens if it gets dark?
    A. Participants should come prepared with headlamps in the event it is needed. Additionally, lighted markers will be placed along the course.

    8. Will the race take place in inclement weather?
    A. Yes. Participants should plan for the current weather. Participants also will face changing temperatures and varied weather conditions throughout the day.

    9. How long will it take to complete the race?
    A. The race will start at 10:30 a.m. (MST), Saturday, October 25th and end no later than 6:00 p.m. on the same day. We expect the finish times to vary greatly among teams and range from 4 to 7 hours.

    10. Will it really take 8 hours to complete the race?
    A. While some teams may choose to take the entire time allotment to finish the race, most will finish within 7 hours.

    11. Do I need to be an elite athlete to participate?
    A. No. The race is open to all athletic levels, whether a "weekend warrior" or professional athlete.

    12. Do I have to qualify for the race?
    A. No, athletes of all levels of fitness and experience are encouraged to participate.

    13. Is there a required equipment list?
    A. Each team member is required to have a mountain bike (included with race registration unless excluded by the race registrant) and helmet. Kayaks and/or canoes also will be provided. Teams must be self-sustaining, requiring that they provide all gear:
  • Running/walking gear
  • Head lamp
  • Glow stick (optional)
  • Strobe light of any kind (optional)
  • Whistle
  • First aid kit
  • Flat tire repair kit (spare tube, tire lever, patch, pump)
  • Water and food (enough to last up to 8 hours)
  • Equipment to be placed in the transition area (bottles, cooler, change of clothing etc.)

    14. Are there any provisions for food, water, and bathrooms?
    A. Bathrooms will be provided near the transition area but not on the course. Fluid and fuel replacement will not be provided anywhere on the course. Refreshments will be available following the race.

    15. Is there a place to keep my gear during the race?
    A. Yes, there will be a secured transition area for you to keep bikes, water, coolers, etc. The course will take you through the transition area after each event. You may also return to the transition area at any time during the race.

    16. What are the mystery challenges? Do I need special skills to complete them?
    A. Mystery challenges will not be revealed prior to the race. The challenges are designed to test physical strength, mental strength, and teamwork. If any special equipment is required it will be provided and staff and volunteers will be on hand to help if needed. Examples of past challenges include climbing a rock wall, archery, orienteering, swimming, knot tying, and puzzles. Of course, it wouldn't be Vegas without also requiring a hand of black jack.

    A. Yes.

    18. Are spectators allowed?
    A. Absolutely! Spectators will find that the best place to watch the race is near the transition area.

    19. What do participants usually wear?
    A. You must wear the racing bib that is given to you at check in. Other than that, wear whatever is comfortable for running and biking. Running shoes are highly recommended.

    20. How technical is the bike course?
    A. Due to terrain differences, each course is unique. The goal is to design courses that are challenging, but not impossible to complete. Each course will have a variety of single track and fire road, along with varying technical levels.

    21. Is there a minimum age requirement?
    A. All participants must be at least 16 years old.

    22. What do we do if one of our team members cannot make the race?
    A. You are allowed to change team members, divisions, etc. at any time prior to the start of the race. You must, however, confirm any changes no later than race check-in on October 25th.

    A. Yes. The race is the same. However, Life Time Fitness has chosen to sponsor the event and to provide its members with a special race entry and package. No other packages provide for the ground transportation, and mountain bike and kayak or canoe rental requirements.
